Bars and Restaurants
The bars and restaurants in Orihuela Costa offer great food, fun and entertainment for all age groups. Many of these are located in handy commercial centres where a variety of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants are all housed under one roof. Other residential areas have popular ‘strips' where the shops and entertainment venues line one road. Scattered among these are a number of individual bars and restaurants. This is convenient for visitors as, no matter where you are staying in Orihuela Costa, you are always within a short walk from a ‘watering hole' 🙂
Beach Bars and Restaurants
The beach bars and restaurants in Orihuela Costa offer a great social scene. These are known locally as ‘Chiringuito's' although this usually applies to bars directly on the beach. Many boast pleasant outdoor terraces to make the most of the lovely sea views. Some, such as the popular Nautilus Restaurant are large affairs with extensive menus. Others are simple rustic wooden huts right on the beach. As they're so convenient for beach goers, drinks can be rather expensive. These beach shacks also serve a selection of popular snack meals and ice creams.
The two most popular beach bars are identical and more than likely owned by the same person. These are located on Playa Flamenca Beach and La Zenia Beach. They offer a shaded area around the bar counter and tables & chairs directly on the beach. The fun Spanish staff are very efficient and keep the drinks flowing no matter how busy they get. Another popular chain of bars are Sunrise. Two of these are located on Punta Prima Beach, not far from Nautilus. These are a favourite with local expats and a big draw are their super value 1.60€ pints of lager.
Tapas Bars and Restaurants
The Orihuela Costa is home to large British, Irish and Scandinavian expat communities. It is also a favourite holiday choice for thousands of visitors from these countries. Therefore the choice of traditional tapas bars and restaurants is rather limited. You may find one or two bars run by foreigners that serve a ‘free' tapa with your drink. Others tend to have a glass enclosed bain-marie with a selection of tapas dishes to order. The tapas on offer are usually geared more towards the foreign palate such as meatballs, beef stew and cheese or chorizo on bread.
The famous Zenia Boulevard is home to two popular tapas chain restaurants found throughout Spain. These are Lizarran and 100 Montaditos. Both serve similar dishes with the emphasis being on pinchos. These are slices of crusty baguette with a variety of toppings secured by a toothpick. In traditional Spanish pincho restaurants you help yourself to what takes your fancy and at the end of your meal you pay for the amount of toothpicks on your plate. For literally thousands of traditional tapas bars, be sure to visit neighbouring Torrevieja.
Irish Bars and Restaurants
By far the most numerous theme bars and restaurants in Orihuela Costa are Irish. It's hard to say which is the most popular as they all have their faithful followers. Paddy's Point on the La Zenia roundabout is always busy. Right next door is Gogartys Irish Bar and both are convenient for those visiting Zenia Boulevard. The Cabo Roig Strip boasts several Irish bars, The Bog Road seeming to be the most popular. In Playa Flamenca, The Celtic Isle has a lovely swimming pool and is right by the Saturday Market. The Emerald Isle also boasts a large swimming pool.
Party Bars and Restaurants
Party hard people wishing to dance till dawn tend to head to for Abbey Tavern in La Florida. It's beautiful gardens are great for al fresco dining and there are two lively outdoor bars. It's very seldom you will find a bar in Orihuela Costa that doesn't serve some sort of food. A prime example of a party bar that serves fantastic food is the Australian themed Bushwacka located on the Cabo Roig Strip. Great value happy hour drinks and cocktails get customers loosened up for the night to come. Then it's top live music acts and DJ sets until the early hours.
The entire Cabo Roig Strip is great for a party night out. It also boasts some of the most popular restaurants in Orihuela Costa. Those who enjoy a good Chinese and plentiful seafood are in for a treat at Asia Garden. They offer an ‘all you can eat' buffet for less than 10€ which includes a good choice of shellfish and seafood (you won't find that in UK). The ‘strip' also has a few ‘Adult Clubs' for a raunchy night out and a CSC ‘Green' Club for a bit of smokey 😉
Surprisingly, there's only one proper nightclub in Orihuela Costa. Sala Passion Dance Club is located in the popular Villamartin Plaza. The club is rather small but does have an outdoor cocktail bar and chill out terrace. They feature resident and guest DJ's and have several theme nights during the summer. Passion is open nightly from 22:00 – 07:30. The plaza also offers late night bars, sports bars and some excellent restaurants such as Fairways. For a much better choice of large pumping nightclubs, visitors should head to neighbouring Torrevieja.
Takeaway Bars and Restaurants
You may wonder why we mention bars in this sub-category? Well, practically every bar in Orihuela Costa will serve you takeaway drinks. Licensing laws in Spain are a lot less strict and if you're prepared to pay bar prices for a takeaway drink, bar owners are only too happy to take your money. Also, you can buy a beer in McDonald's should you wish! Most restaurants are also happy to do you a takeaway. Other popular takeaways in Orihuela Costa include Subway, Burger King, Chicken Ranch, Fresco, various pizzerias and a handful of kebab shops.
