Stand Up Paddle
Stand up paddle (SUP) is also commonly referred to as paddle surf and is a relatively ‘new kid on the block' when it comes to water sports. Originating in Hawaii, the sport's popularity really took off in 2013 when in the USA it recorded the highest number of first time paddlers of any outdoor sports activity. Using the wave technique of surfing and the paddling technique of kayaking, stand up paddle can be enjoyed both on lakes and at sea.
Stand Up Paddle Techniques
Before it became popular as a sport, similar variations of SUP were used centuries ago by African and South American tribesmen to negotiate river journeys. It was also used by Israeli lifeguards as a means to get a clear view of the sea and a rapid way of rescuing swimmers. These days it's popular as a relaxing leisure activity on lakes and calm seas or the more thrilling activity of heading out in high seas to ride the waves, just like surfing with a paddle.
Stand Up Paddle In Orihuela Costa
A number of water sports and activities including SUP can be enjoyed in Orihuela Costa. These are normally more available during the summer season along the area's popular beaches and marinas. Neighbouring Torrevieja boasts its own sports marina where visitors can enjoy deep sea fishing, sailing, kayaking, jet ski, cable ski, flyboarding, banana boats and SUP.
Bocana Water Sports Centre is based in the sports marina and offers a thrilling selection of water activities including SUP. Visitors have the choice of hiring SUP boards for varying time durations and discounts are given when hiring in a group. These group discounts are also given for 1 and 2 hour SUP sessions with an instructor. There is also the chance of combining a SUP lesson with an excursion taking in some of the area's beautiful coastline.
